Character: Himari Takakura | 高倉 陽鞠
Series: Mawaru Penguindrum | 輪るピングドラム
Debut: Private Photoshoot
I became enchanted with Mawaru Penguindrum while living in Japan, and even while on a costuming hiatus, I knew I HAD to eventually cosplay Himari. Although this design is not as elaborate or beautiful as Princess of the Crystal, it shares some similarities and coordinates perfectly with Double-H’s main outfits, making it an ideal choice for our cosplay trio to take on together.
Like 99% of the groups I do, we chose matching fabrics so everything would coordinate nicely. All 3 of us then made our own costumes individually, since we live in different states. The bodice was based off a commercial pattern, Simplicity 3629. We did have to make modifications to the pattern, including making adjustments for the contrast side panel. The bodice was 3 layers: black sateen for the shell and lining, with a canvas inner layer to support plastic boning for shape. The contrast side panels were casa satin layered with a glitter organza overlay. Although my partners had to make their own bias tape, I was able to use pre-made since I didn’t have to fabric match my side panel. The bodice closes with a separating zipper in the back. The top lace was hand stitched, and the bottom ruffle is gathered glitter organza, also hand stitched.
I made everyone’s star accessories out of wooden pre-cut shapes, painted with a base acrylic and topped with a glitter layer. Gloves were purchased from WeLoveColors. My costume called for thigh high boots, so I made covers out of 4-way wet look spandex. The bottom of the heels were orginally a faux wood design, which I covered with Plasti-Dip spray. Dance briefs are worn under the bodices, and mine has 3 layers of ruffles sewn to the back for accuracy. Wig is character specific, from the eBay shop “MoeMall.”
