As a Japanese culture enthusiast and reader/fan of Danny Choo’s blog and website (and now company!), I became interested in cosplaying Mirai because her design is incredibly adorable. After taking a hiatus from creating costumes while living in Japan for a year, I hit the ground running with this project when I returned to the U.S.A. — literally the day after arriving back home.
I used Kona cotton for the orange pieces because it was difficult finding the right shade (most of them were too bright). The skirt is just a basic knife pleated skirt, lined for thickness, with the lace sewn into the lining and ribbon top-stitched. I based the blouse off of a dress pattern with Princess seams, and used white ponte roma so a zipper wouldn’t be needed. The collar was very challenging to pattern from scratch, and I almost scrapped the costume entirely… thankfully my brother encouraged me to keep going. Puff sleeves were made from my personal pattern stash, and I made both of the patches with applique and satin stitching. I ran out of time to make the ribbon, so I just used a pre-made one from the craft store as a stand-in. Wig is from Epic Cosplay Wigs in “Caramel Brown.” I styled the braids in front, and used a clear band, styling gel + heat to create the ahoge on top. Contact lenses are from Pinky Paradise.
